DIY Craft & Storage Closet Makeover

This post is sponsored by Westlake Ace Hardware, but all my opinions are my own. #Westlakeaceyourproject

You know that room in  your house for overflow? The one you kindly shut the door to most of the time but leaves a sense of panic in your gut knowing it’s still there? Well I am tackling mine. We moved into our house over a year ago. And we have been doing TONS of projects and home renovation. So honestly the guest bedroom and closet was a nightmare. First up was the closet. Please tell me I am not the only one who has boxes to be unpacked after a YEAR? It’s horrible, but with the motivation of a garage sale I began to sort, clean, and purge ALL the things. Before I could start putting things back into their place I decided to do a closet renovation and I am so happy on how it turned out!

First off was a shopping trip to our local Westlake Ace Hardware store. I brought my two minis along to help me pick out paint samples for the closet. They love stores that have mini carts and love looking at ALL the colors. They have so many great brands and a VAST amount of color options.

I was immediately drawn to the Magnolia Home By Joanna Gaines paint collection because obviously she is #housegoals. It is a designer line of paint at an affordable price point and everyone wants to recreate her style in their own home. Then I fell completely in love with her color called Antique Rose which is just the faintest blush color and I knew it would be perfect in our closet space and maybe for the whole room.

Just to the side of the paint sample cards was something I had never seen. For $1.99 some of their most popular colors come in peel and stick samples.  Absolutely no one likes getting out multiple colors and painting them on the wall and getting all the brushes dirty. This is such a cheap and efficient way at checking to make sure this is the color for you. So I grabbed a few options and I will also be using these for future DIY projects when I need a pop of color (maybe just stick to the back of a kids book shelf?).

Here is the closet beforehand. My husband asked if we wanted to do built ins or take out the rods and shelves but I really wanted to keep this minimal. If for some reason it needed to function as an actual closet with clothes in the future we would still be able to do that. We did switch out the rods and put in more shelf supports as everything was a little loose from the house being built in the 1980’s.

Next up was the actual painting, which I left up to the husband because he doesn’t trust me with painters tape or painting an even application. I absolutely loved how it turned out. It brightened up the space so much and am absolutely in love with the color.

I wanted a little bit more storage in the closet so I ordered this cheap dresser on Overstock. Since I had already been bitten by the DIY bug and was crushing on all the color options at Westlake Ace Hardware, I decided to spruce it up! My cute painting partner and I chose the color Emmie’s Room from the Magnolia Home line. We tested it out with the peel and stick option first and then got to work!

Side note. I do not know where this jack o’lantern bucket came from but it keeps reappearing and showing up in my pictures. It is not fall, this was not taken in October. This is just my life.

Anyway, this dresser is on sale for $86 and is perfect for a closet. We painted it and then I decided to paint the plastic pulls it came with gold just for an extra pop. It make it looks so much more high end.

After the dresser was complete, I added some new storage pieces and incorporated some that I already had and organized everything back in to the closet. We even have EXTRA space now. It makes my heart so happy that this part is done. We will be finishing up the guest room/office space now and am thinking of bringing the color Antique Rose throughout the entire room. It is a little girly but this will primarily be my office space and I absolutely love it. I hope you enjoy the final outcome as much as I do!
