Tulsa, OK was so blessed when the Oklahoma Aquarium was built. We had Sadie’s second birthday here 2 years ago in their shark room and absolutely loved it. They wall off the upper area above the shark exhibit and you have a private room with great views for an hour.
When John became super into turtles this year I knew this would be a great place to have it again. With our move, and of course second child syndrome, I did not get around to reserving the Shark room exhibit and so we reserved their event center. Here is the link to their birthday party packages. I had been a little over a year ago for another party and it was a basic plain private room. However when we arrived we were pleasantly surprised it has been updated with plenty of decorations and even a fish tank in the room! You really do not need to provide much party supplies to have a fabulous party here!
I recommend getting 3 circle table clothes from Party City, Oriental Trading or even Dollar Tree and 2 large rectangle clothes for the food and gift table. I love the way the way a table skirt takes things up a notch and are only $7.99 at Party City.
My daughter and I added some streamers and fish cut outs from Party City to one of the table skirts before we left for the party and I love the way it turned out and was a craft that we could work on together. For centerpieces I just stole things we already add for John and Sadie’s room and added some fish netting to keep with nautical theme although I realize that is kind of ironic. We got some small figurines to scatter about from amazon for super cheap and they would make great cupcake toppers as well. I plan on re-using these and making some bath bombs for the kids and placing them in the center for a fun bath toy surprise!
Although I am a new Cricut owner, I actually haven’t gotten it out of the box so I had this sweet banner made from an Etsy shop. I loved the color combo and she was sweet and sent along a bag of free confetti. The aquarium does not allow confetti (or balloons or pinatas) so I ended up gluing some on to the favor bags which made for a fun pop of color and just being extra.
John’s sweet Godmother made these adorable PBJs that we used a sea turtle cookie cutter to keep up with the theme. The cupcakes were from Reasor’s because they are 1. delicious 2. cheap 3. adorable. Here is another zoomed out view of the food table which shows the amazing wall art that the aquarium already has up. We also got some fun color and sea themed candy from Candy Castle for guests to add to their favor bag.
How cute is this yellow submarine cut out that they have in the Event Center. It was a big hit with all the kids and made for a perfect photo op.
Although small, this aquarium is a great touch to the event center with some bright and beautiful fish to admire while you are snacking and opening gifts.
We were able to prepay for Turtle Food (carrots) which the event coordinator Stephanie delivered at the end of the party that we were able to give the guests which was so fun since the turtle feeding time was not active after the party.
We loved having the Sunday evening event time from 4-6 pm. You have the room from 4-5 with 30 minutes of set up before. And then you can have guests go to the aquarium from 5-6. The aquarium stops allowing entries at 5 pm so this ended up being a perfect time because by the time we started looking around the aquarium was pretty empty for a weekend.
I recommend doing minimal decorations as you only have 30 minutes for set up. Have as much put together as you possibly can. Throw on tablecloths and centerpieces. And get your food out and ready. People are never on time because of well…life, and toddlers. They are the worst. So you do need to be aware of time. Eating, cake/candle, and presents. You also need to clean up right after the party so you need to streamline that as quickly as possible so that you can get out and enjoy the aquarium with your kids. Have plenty of bags that you can throw all your decor in and the rest in the trash and they give you a cart to get the presents and items out to the car. Then get back in there and enjoy that precious Sea Turtle.
He tends to be resting for awhile. I think one of the docents said that he tends to make a few laps maybe every 30 minutes. But when he comes out, man, what a show. He is so friendly and comes right up the glass and even pokes his head out of the water and will try to splash. This is by far my favorite exhibit at the Oklahoma Aquarium.
Also, how amazing is this before and after of Ol Russ with the turtle background and then the true life turtle. He is such a trooper.
Oh my gah. I can’t quit laughing.
Nothing better than ending your birthday with sweet hugs from your God brother.
Also, don’t forget the coins. Because this is apparently a huge hit for the age group. I apologize to Amber for my kids spending all her money.
Thank you Oklahoma Aquarium for another awesome birthday party for my child! We love you so much!!!
